So tonight I saw an ad for a service by Toyota Canada that seeks to put you in the right Toyota (read: a CUV). It’s essentially a survey about what features are important to you and how you drive. I answered the 15+ questions like a normal Jalop would: manual transmission, fuel economy is less important, I do a lot of my driving on back roads and I carry a hockey bag.
And look what they recommend! I actually kind of want to test drive a Corolla S and hoon it like a rental car haha. Essentially all it did is show me that Toyota doesn’t really get the enthusiast market.

Except they did get it right. Their top pick is the Taco, which for your stated answers makes absolute sense as the best vehicle in their portfolio.
That the Highlander (there can only be one) came second isn’t that far off, they just don’t offer it with a manual, and they no longer make anything that competes with Jeep since the FJ Cruiser is dead.
If you can get a Corolla S with a stick, it’s a very competent commuter car. Sure, it could be more fun, but it does what it was designed for well.
And Toyota does care about the enthusiasts, they have the FBRZS, it’s badged a Scion so it isn’t in this list.
Can Toyota do better? Absolutely. And they should. But they won’t make any money trying to be the Japanese Lotus.

You’re completely right, I just find it interesting that their Corolla S is kind of the sportiest things available (with the exception of the Toyobaru as you mention)

Huh.
That’s actually quite accurate, I pretty much despise all their big truck/crossover lineup except the Venza and somewhat the Highlander.

It, sadly, is their sportiest offering. I would not complain if they made it slightly more fun. They could take over from Honda and make good, fun, not dull commuter cars.
It won’t take much effort either.

That was too much fun.
“How many hockey bags do you carry?” That sent a huge grin across my face.
Somebody should tell Toyota that contributions to stereotypes are not tax deductible.

It gave me, in this order:
1. Taco
2. Tundra
3. Highlander
Kind of what I expected, so good job on Toyota’s part.
